At Guildford Primary School, Science is a key component of our wholistic learning program where students from years 1 to 6 attend Science for a 2 hour block each week. Our science program is delivered in a newly refurbished Science Lab by a passionate and enthusiastic Science Specialist who believes there is a budding scientist within everyone!
Each term, students investigate and learn about a different Science Understanding from the Western Australian Science Curriculum which incorporates Physical, Chemical, Biological and Earth and Space Sciences. The learning program uses practical, fun, hands-on activities to foster and cater for each student’s learning needs.
The Investigation Process is a central focus, where students in each year level are supported in strengthening their ability to identify, conduct, record and communicate their investigations. It is important that students develop skills to describe their observations, record the data and express the ‘why’, by reflecting on what evidence supports that idea. Interwoven throughout these sessions are science literacy reviews and targeted activities which focus on observations, predictions and identifying testable/investigable questions.
In 2024, students, with the guidance of our Science Specialist and gardener, designed, constructed and began planting seedlings in our new Ngala Koya Mia (Our Frog Place/Home). With our growing Frog Place, classes also participate in school ground field trips to observe and gather information on what changes are occurring in their environment throughout the year. These field trips reinforce the importance of our Science ‘Code of Caring’ which fosters caring for our environment and the animals we share it with.
